Cats possess fascinating eyes, crucial for their survival as both predators and beloved companions. Like humans, cats have eyelids that play a vital role in eye health and vision. However, cats have an additional protective feature: the nictitating membrane, often referred to as the third eyelid. This whitish-pink membrane is located beneath the other eyelids in the inner corner of the eye, near the nose. The third eyelid is a crucial component of the cat eyelid system, providing extra protection to the eyeball. It extends upwards and outwards to shield the eye from scratches, such as when navigating through bushes, or in response to inflammation or irritation. The conjunctiva, as mentioned earlier, lines the inner surface of both the upper and lower eyelids, as well as the third eyelid, contributing to the overall health and lubrication of the eye surface.

For proper function, the eyes must remain moist, and tears are essential for this. Tears are a complex mixture of water, oil, and mucus. Lacrimal glands, situated at the top outer edge of each eye, produce the watery part of tears. Glands within the third eyelid also contribute to this watery component. Mucus, produced by goblet cells in the conjunctiva, and oil, from Meibomian glands within the eyelids, complete the tear film. This combination creates a protective tear layer that evaporates slowly and provides comprehensive eye lubrication. Nasolacrimal ducts drain tears from the eyes into the nose, with openings at the edge of the upper and lower eyelids near the nose.

Physical Examination of the Cat Eyelid and Eye

Given the importance of vision for cats, a thorough eye examination, including the cat eyelid and surrounding structures, is a critical part of any veterinary checkup. Be prepared to provide your veterinarian with any relevant history, such as previous eye injuries, treatments, medications, signs of vision problems, and vaccination history.
