As a devoted cat lover, I constantly seek ways to enhance the lives of my feline companions. Like many cat parents, I believe in providing my cats with everything they need to thrive, within reasonable limits, of course! This led me to a wonderful idea: designing a Cat Room that serves as the ultimate cat playground.
For quite some time, I had considered adding cat shelves somewhere in our home. It then struck me – why not install them in the very room where my cats already enjoy their meals? Transforming this space into a dedicated cat room seemed like the perfect way to create the ultimate functional cat space. So, come along as I guide you through our newly revamped and improved cat room!

First Feature: Elevated Cat Shelves
The undeniable highlight of our cat room is undoubtedly the two cat walls adorned with stylish cat shelves. Beyond their aesthetic appeal (at least in my opinion!), these shelves are incredibly functional, offering a fantastic activity center for my four feline friends: Dexter, Olive, Sophie, and Woodrow.

For the design and layout of these cat walls, I collaborated with Hayley Williams from Cat Therapy. Okay, truth be told, “collaborated” might be a generous term – I entrusted the entire design process to Hayley’s expert hands!
Hayley skillfully selected the products, conceived the layout, and presented me with detailed mockups of her vision. While we made a few minor adjustments along the way, the final outcome closely mirrors her original design.
If you’re seeking inspiration and cat room design ideas, I wholeheartedly recommend consulting with Hayley! Her expertise in creating feline-friendly spaces is invaluable.

In a forthcoming post dedicated to these cat walls, I plan to delve deeper into my experience working with Hayley, the rationale behind choosing specific cat shelves, and the overall design journey. Stay tuned for more insights!

Cat Shelf Brands Used
Hayley recommended and selected shelves from two reputable brands for our cat room: Catastrophic Creations and Fukumaru. Both brands are known for their quality and cat-friendly designs, ensuring durability and feline enjoyment.
Second Feature: Elevated Feeding Stations
For several years, my cats have been using the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder from Sure Petcare. If I were limited to recommending just one product to a multi-cat household, this would undoubtedly be it. It’s a game-changer for managing individual cat diets and preventing food stealing.
I initially received these feeders as complimentary samples back in 2019 when I wrote a comprehensive review about them. Since then, they’ve been in continuous use and are still performing exceptionally well.
Sophie, a white cat, patiently sits on a cat shelf above Dexter, a tabby cat, who is eating from a lower cat shelf, highlighting the multi-level cat room design.
Here are three of the four pet feeders we currently use. I personalized them with craft stickers displaying each cat’s name. (Just kidding about them knowing their names on the feeders, it’s more for the benefit of our cat sitter!).

When envisioning the cat room, I was determined to have the feeders elevated off the floor. Our then 9-month-old puppy had a peculiar fondness for licking the feeder lids. While he never managed to access the food itself, which speaks volumes about the feeder’s robust design, raising them seemed like a sensible solution.
At my request, Hayley incorporated four dedicated feeding stations into the cat wall design. Each cat swiftly adapted to their designated feeder location, although Sophie still conducts regular inspections of each one, just in case a feeder might have been left ajar by mistake!
Here’s a short video clip of Sophie diligently exploring and re-checking the feeders, demonstrating her thoroughness in food management. (And yes, I even have a Ring security camera in the cat room!). [Insert Video Link Here if available, or remove this sentence].
Another advantage of having elevated pet feeders is the reduced strain on my back. No more bending down multiple times daily to manage food bowls! Yes, I designed this cat room to be convenient for me too!

Microchip Pet Feeder Options
Sure Petcare currently offers the advanced Microchip Pet Feeder Connect, which connects to WiFi and an app for detailed feeding insights. However, we utilize the original version, the one we use on Amazon, which effectively serves our needs without the smart features.
Third Feature: Discreet Litter Setup
Let’s be honest, no one particularly enjoys the sight of the cat litter area, right? Right?! (Although, if you do, that’s perfectly fine too, I suppose!). My solution to concealing the litter area is a litter closet. It’s essentially their private bathroom.
The litter closet, nestled in the corner of the cat room, features a small cat door for discreet access.
We installed a mini cat door, the Purrfect Portal, in the closet door. (If we ever decide to sell our house, it will definitely appeal to a cat enthusiast or someone with a fondness for miniature entrances!).
Dexter, a tabby cat, demonstrates the use of the Purrfect Portal cat door installed in the litter closet within the cat room.
Now, let’s take a peek inside the litter closet.

Inside, we have a Modkat Flip Litter Box (on the left) and a Litter-Robot 4 (on the right). With four cats in the house, providing options is essential. We also have another litter closet downstairs, equipped solely with a Litter-Robot 4. And yes, as you might have guessed, we are affiliates for Litter-Robot’s parent company, Whisker. However, we were satisfied customers who purchased two Litter-Robot 3 models back in 2019, long before becoming affiliates.
Also within the litter closet, though not visible in the picture, is an air purifier that runs continuously, 24/7, to manage odors.
June 2024 Update: For those concerned about litter box odors, I recently reviewed a new air purifier, which I installed in the litter closet. Read the review of a new air purifier for more details.
Litter Setup Essentials
Here’s a list of the key items we utilize in our litter closet for optimal hygiene and convenience in our cat room.

And there you have it – a complete tour of our perfectly purrfect new cat room! It’s designed to be both highly functional and an engaging play area for the cats. They absolutely adore it, I’m thrilled with it, and everyone is content, except perhaps our puppy Guster, who can no longer access the pet feeders (though, in a recent development, Guster has grown taller than anticipated and can now reach them again! He’s a good boy and mostly leaves them alone, but lesson learned: always anticipate future growth spurts!).
