Having spent considerable time on the water with various Bass Cat models, including the Cougar, Puma FTD, Lynx, and Puma STS, my experiences provide a solid basis for appreciating the unique qualities of the Caracal. While each model offers distinct advantages, the Caracal holds a special place due to its thoughtful layout and robust construction.
The Caracal, alongside the Lynx, immediately impressed me with its spacious front deck. This wider platform offers anglers enhanced freedom of movement and ample space for tackle and equipment, crucial for long days on the water or competitive fishing scenarios. Furthermore, the deep rear storage compartments of the Caracal are a significant asset. They provide generous room for organizing gear, keeping the deck uncluttered and maximizing fishing efficiency. In rough water conditions, both the Caracal and Lynx hulls demonstrated exceptional performance, delivering a stable and confident ride. However, in comparison to the Puma FTD, the Caracal, while incredibly capable, didn’t quite match the same exhilarating feeling of speed and agility. The Puma FTD, with its net holder and convenient step-up cooler, remained a personal favorite for its overall sporty feel and layout.
When contrasted with the ultra-spacious Lynx, the Caracal strikes a balance. The Lynx boasts the most storage capacity of any boat I’ve owned, which is undeniably advantageous for anglers who carry extensive gear. However, the higher step from the cooler to the deck in the Lynx presented a slight challenge for me personally over time. The Caracal, while offering slightly less overall storage than the Lynx, maintains a very generous amount while prioritizing ease of movement and accessibility throughout the boat.
The arrival of the Puma STS, with its more traditional layout, was intriguing. After experiencing the Puma STS firsthand, its appeal for specific fishing styles became clear. It performs admirably, reaching mid-70 mph speeds even with fully loaded compartments, and handles rough water effectively. The ergonomics of the Puma STS layout are excellent, featuring user-friendly slam latches and a conveniently placed under-seat cooler, freeing up the step cooler for dedicated fishing gear. The inclusion of a net holder is a practical touch, particularly appreciated in tournament fishing where net usage is permitted. Feedback from friends and co-anglers has consistently praised the ride quality and overall layout of the Puma STS.
While the Caracal STS might possess a marginal speed advantage over the Puma STS, the performance difference is likely minimal. Ultimately, the decision between the Caracal STS and Puma STS often comes down to personal preference in ergonomics. Examining the compartment layout, step-up cooler configuration, and overall flow of each boat in person is highly recommended. Both are exceptional boats, and the price point is unlikely to be a deciding factor. Choosing the model that best aligns with individual ergonomic preferences will lead to greater satisfaction and long-term enjoyment.
