St. Petersburg’s vibrant food scene is constantly evolving, and the arrival of Samurai Cat, a unique Japanese bakery and cafe, has added an exciting new dimension. This fast-casual eatery is quickly becoming a local favorite, offering a delightful array of Japanese breakfast, lunch, and treat options that are both reasonably priced and incredibly delicious. Open from 8 am to 8 pm, Samurai Cat provides the perfect spot for a quick takeout or a relaxed dine-in experience, catering to early birds and those looking for a casual early dinner.
Upon my first visit, I was immediately captivated and knew I had to return the same day to fully immerse myself in the Samurai Cat experience. Having explored Japanese cuisine for over a year, I was particularly excited to discover their Onigiri, a traditional Japanese comfort food that’s still relatively rare to find authentically prepared in St. Pete. During my visits, I had the pleasure of chatting with Chef Howard in the open kitchen area, observing the friendly interactions with returning customers, a testament to the welcoming atmosphere and quality offerings at Samurai Cat.
Unveiling the Magic of Onigiri at Samurai Cat
For those unfamiliar, Onigiri is a cornerstone of Japanese culinary tradition. These seasoned rice balls, often stuffed and typically shaped into triangles, are a staple in Japanese bento boxes and a beloved comfort food for adults. Samurai Cat excels in delivering an authentic Onigiri experience, mirroring the grab-and-go style found in Japan.
The packaging itself is a nod to Japanese convenience store culture, where Onigiri is commonly sold in clear plastic to maintain the crispness of the nori seaweed. Unlike pre-wrapped versions where moisture can lead to soggy seaweed, Samurai Cat provides the nori separately, ensuring a delightful crunch with each bite. Here’s a step-by-step guide to enjoying your Onigiri the authentic way:
Packaged Onigiri
- Open the Package: Carefully peel open the clear plastic packaging of the Onigiri.
- Place on Napkin: Gently place the rice triangle onto a napkin to prepare for wrapping.
Open the package and place rice triangle on a napkin
- Remove the Nori: This is the most delicate part. The nori sheet is fragile and requires a gentle touch to avoid tearing. Hold the nori in place with one hand and carefully peel back the plastic wrap from each corner, starting from the center.
Carefully open the plastic around the nori and remove it
- Wrap and Enjoy: Once the plastic is removed, position the rice triangle in the center of the nori sheet and wrap it up. If needed, a touch of moisture can help seal the corners.
Wrapped Onigiri Ready to Eat
Samurai Cat currently offers two delicious Onigiri varieties:
- Tuna Onigiri: A classic choice featuring seasoned short-grain rice filled with a creamy mixture of tuna and Kewpie mayo, all encased in crisp nori.
- Smoked Salmon Onigiri: For a richer flavor, this option includes short-grain rice filled with smoked salmon cream cheese, brunoise red onions, and dill, coated with everything bagel seasoning.
These generously sized Onigiri are substantial enough for a satisfying snack or light meal. During my visit, I indulged in both and can attest to their exceptional taste and quality.
Beyond Onigiri: Exploring Samurai Cat’s Diverse Menu
While Onigiri is a star attraction, Samurai Cat’s menu extends far beyond, offering a range of Japanese-inspired delights. The Cold Sesame Udon Salad is a standout dish, perfect for a refreshing and filling meal.
Cold Sesame Udon Salad
The salad features chilled udon noodles tossed in a flavorful sesame soy dressing, interwoven with crisp cabbage strands, refreshing cucumber, and fragrant chives, all topped with sesame seeds. The contrasting textures of chewy udon and crunchy cabbage, combined with the umami-rich dressing, create a harmonious and delicious salad. For those who enjoy a spicy kick, a drizzle of chili crunch oil elevates this dish to another level. Don’t forget to squeeze the lime for an added burst of freshness.
Another must-try is the Tamago Sando, a Japanese egg salad sandwich that’s taken to gourmet heights at Samurai Cat.

This sandwich is a delightful combination of creamy Kewpie mayo-based egg salad and soft-boiled, jammy eggs, all nestled between slices of fluffy Japanese milk bread. Chef Howard Lopez, previously of Noble Rice and Sushi Sho Rexley, brings his culinary expertise to this simple yet elegant sandwich, making it a true highlight.
To complement your meal, Samurai Cat offers a selection of refreshing beverages, including the Matcha Lemonade. This invigorating drink is the perfect balance of tart and sweet, and is sure to become a regular order for many.
For a sweet treat, the Ube Rice Crispy is an excellent choice. Made with purple yam, this dessert is wonderfully gooey, sticky, and perfectly sweet, offering a unique and satisfying end to your meal.

On my return visit, I discovered the Tiger Avocado Toast, which quickly became a new favorite.
Tiger Avocado Toast
This open-faced sandwich, or Japanese-style avocado toast, is an explosion of flavor. Topped with jammy egg, avocado, lime, cucumbers, nori, chili crisp, and scallions, all on toasted Japanese milk bread, every bite is packed with a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. The presentation is also visually stunning, adding to the overall dining experience. All sandwiches and toasts at Samurai Cat are served on traditional Japanese Milk Bread, sourced directly from New York, highlighting their commitment to quality ingredients.
For a beverage on my second visit, I opted for the Traditional Thai Iced Tea.

This creamy and sweet drink, made with Thai Tea, condensed milk, and evaporated milk, is a classic choice. While delightfully sweet, it might not be for those who prefer less sugary drinks.
Although I didn’t personally try it, the Fruit Sando is a popular item worth mentioning. This Japanese Fruit Sandwich features crème chantilly, strawberries, and kiwi nestled between slices of Japanese milk bread, making it a visually appealing and refreshing treat.

Immerse Yourself in the Samurai Cat Atmosphere
Beyond the exceptional food, Samurai Cat offers a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment. The restaurant’s decor incorporates charming Japanese elements, such as decorative Samurai hats and Maneki-Neko beckoning cats, creating a unique and inviting ambiance. During my visit, a Japanese reality show, Terrace House, played on the TV, adding to the authentic Japanese cafe experience.
