How to Weigh Your Vehicle Correctly Using CAT Scales

CAT Scale Company is dedicated to the trucking industry and prioritizes customer satisfaction by ensuring the accuracy of their weighing scales. They guarantee the precision of their weights, offering reimbursement for overweight fines if their scales are proven wrong and even court representation if their scales are correct.

To ensure accurate weighing at any CAT Scale, proper positioning of your vehicle is crucial. The following guide provides instructions for different trailer types to help you position your truck correctly on the scale platforms.

Standard Trailer

For standard trailers, the goal is to have all three axles – steer, drive, and trailer – on the scale simultaneously. Drive onto the CAT scale ensuring your steer axle is positioned on platform 1, your drive axle on platform 2, and your trailer axle on platform 3.

Spread-axle Trailer

Weighing a spread-axle trailer on Cat Scales requires a two-step process.

Position 1: Initially, position your truck as you would for a standard trailer. Place your steer axle on platform 1 and your drive axle on platform 2. The weighmaster will record this initial weight.

Position 2: Next, pull your truck forward as directed by the weighmaster. Reposition your trailer so that your front trailer axle is on platform 2 and your rear trailer axle is on platform 3. This two-step process ensures accurate weight distribution for spread-axle trailers on CAT scales.

Note: These instructions are also applicable for Oversize Weighs. For assistance with weighing multiple axles or complex configurations, please contact the CAT Scale 24-Hour Help Desk at 1-877-228-7225, ext. 6.

Oversize Weigh

Similar to spread-axle trailers, weighing oversized loads on CAT scales involves a two-position process to accommodate the extended length.

Position 1: Begin by positioning your truck in the same manner as for a standard trailer, with your steer axle on platform 1 and your drive axle on platform 2.

Position 2: Carefully pull forward until the trailer axle of your first trailer is positioned on platform 1, the front axle of your second trailer is on platform 2, and the rear axle of your second trailer is on platform 3. This ensures all axles of your oversized load are weighed accurately using CAT scales.

Truck & Trailer Combination

When weighing a complete truck and trailer combination on CAT scales, ensure the entire unit is positioned on the scale platform. For optimal accuracy, position the steer axle (front wheels) of the truck on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle of the truck on platform 2. Typically, the trailer axles will be positioned on platform 3.

Motorhome Weighing

For motorhome weighing on CAT scales, the entire vehicle must be on the scale. Position the steer axle (front wheels) of the motorhome on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle on platform 2. Platform 3 will likely remain empty.

It’s important to note that CAT scales provide axle weights and total gross weight but cannot weigh individual wheels or corners of the vehicle. Attempting to obtain individual wheel weights is not permitted due to potential damage to both your vehicle and the CAT scales.

Tag Axle Motorhomes: If you need to weigh a tag axle motorhome on CAT scales, please call 1-877-228-7225, ext 6 for specific instructions to ensure accurate weight readings.

Motorhome with Tow Car

When weighing a motorhome with a tow car using CAT scales, the entire combination must be positioned on the scale. Place the motorhome’s steer axle (front wheels) on platform 1 and the drive axle or rear axle on platform 2. The towed car will typically register on platform 3.

Again, CAT scales provide axle weights and gross weight; individual wheel weights cannot be obtained and are not permitted.

Truck & Fifth Wheel Trailer

For weighing trucks with fifth-wheel trailers on CAT scales, ensure the entire combination is on the scale platform. Position the steer axle (front wheels) of the truck on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle of the truck on platform 2. The fifth wheel trailer axles will generally be positioned on platform 3.

Straight Truck Weighing

When weighing a straight truck on CAT scales, ensure the entire truck is on the scale. Position the steer axle (front wheels) of the straight truck on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle on platform 2. Platform 3 will likely be empty during straight truck weighing.

Straight Truck with Tow Car

For straight trucks towing a car, ensure the entire combination is on the CAT scale. Position the steer axle (front wheels) of the straight truck on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle of the straight truck on platform 2. The towed car will typically register on platform 3.

Truck & Boat Trailer

When using CAT scales to weigh a truck and boat trailer, the entire combination needs to be on the scale. Position the steer axle (front wheels) of the truck on platform 1, and the drive axle or rear axle of the truck on platform 2. The boat trailer axles will usually be positioned on platform 3.
