How to Craft the Purr-fect Disguise: The Cat Mustache Motorcycle Puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3

Navigating the intricate puzzles of Gabriel Knight 3 can be as perplexing as a cat chasing its tail, and the motorcycle rental conundrum is no exception. To rev up your adventure, Gabriel needs to master the art of disguise, and a crucial element involves a rather peculiar ingredient: a Cat With Mustache. This guide will walk you through each step to fool the moped clerk and get Gabriel on two wheels, drawing inspiration from classic adventure game logic.

First things first, let’s set the stage back at the museum. Remember that lost-and-found box? It’s time for a bit of light-fingered acquisition. Gabriel, with his newfound need for a disguise, can now liberate a red cap from its confines. With this vibrant headwear secured, our next stop is the church, specifically the Abbe’s residence.

Keep a watchful eye on the Abbe, who is diligently tending to his plants with a spray bottle. Patience is key here. Wait for the Abbe to retreat into his house, and seize the opportune moment to “borrow” the spray bottle.

Emerging onto the street, you’ll likely spot a black cat lurking in a corner. Engage with this feline – examine and pet it. This interaction is more than just a friendly gesture; it’s a strategic move in our disguise plan.

The cat, seemingly startled or simply in a hurry, will dart into a small opening of an old shed. Investigate this hole. Now, access your inventory and retrieve the masking tape. If you missed grabbing it earlier from Gabriel’s hotel room, a quick detour back to the hotel and a rummage in the dresser will rectify this. Apply the masking tape to the shed door hole, creating a makeshift fur trap.

Take a step back from the shed, and you’ll notice the cat has now relocated to a ledge, out of Gabriel’s immediate reach. Attempting to pet or grab the cat directly proves futile due to its elevated position. This is where the spray bottle comes into play. Select the spray bottle from your inventory and use it on the cat. Annoyed by the sudden spritz, the cat will leap down and, predictably, dash back into the shed through the small opening.

This time, as the cat makes its hasty retreat, it will leave behind a precious resource: black fur, clinging to the masking tape you cleverly placed earlier. Collect the masking tape, now adorned with black fur, adding this essential component to your inventory.

Return to the familiar surroundings of the hotel. It’s time to gather a few more items crucial for our disguise that you might have overlooked previously. These include a black marker from the hotel desk (ensure Jean is not watching too closely), a piece of candy from the lounge table, and a packet of syrup from the dining room.

Ascend to the upper floor and knock on Mosely’s door, room 33. He’ll grant you entry. For a subtle hint about the candy’s purpose, you can offer it to Mosely. He will readily accept and consume it, perhaps giving you a clue about its distracting nature. Engage in conversation with Mosely about his passport – this dialogue is key to unlocking the next step in the disguise puzzle. You might need another piece of candy if you gave him one earlier, so return downstairs and grab another.

Locate the painting above the table depicting the street scene. Place a piece of candy from your inventory on the table. Now, head downstairs to the lobby and find the room buzzers to the left of Jean’s front desk. Examine the buzzers and press the one for room 33, Mosely’s room. This will summon Mosely down to the front desk, but his sweet tooth will divert his attention to the candy you strategically placed earlier.

Take the stairs on the right side, positioning yourself on the opposite side of Gabriel’s room entrance. Follow the camera view around to Mosely’s room and observe him exiting and heading towards the candy-laden table. Mosely will bend down to retrieve and devour the candy, just as anticipated. This is your moment. Position Gabriel just behind Mosely and use the mouse cursor to pickpocket him, swiftly acquiring his passport.

Once the passport is in your possession, quickly make your way to Mosely’s room 33 and enter. Locate his distinctive gold coat hanging on the coat rack. Use the verb menu to take the coat and add it to your inventory before exiting Mosely’s room.

This sequence might require a few attempts to execute flawlessly, but persistence is key. You can repeat the candy-and-buzzer strategy as many times as needed to secure both the passport and the gold coat. Just ensure you have a steady supply of candy and keep buzzing Mosely.

Now, access your inventory once more, ensuring you have the black marker and syrup alongside the newly acquired passport and cat fur. Select the black marker and use it on Mosely’s passport to create a drawn-on mustache. Next, take the black fur from the cat and combine it with the syrup to fashion a more realistic, albeit sticky, black mustache. Finally, use the red hat on the syrup-and-fur mustache, and then place the combined mustache-and-hat onto the gold coat. This completes your Mosely disguise, mustache and all.

With your disguise meticulously crafted, return to the moped rental shop, ready to convince the clerk that you are indeed someone else entirely, thanks in part to a cat mustache and a little bit of adventure game ingenuity.
