The inspiration behind this charming google cat adventure comes from a real-life muse: Doodler Juliana Chen’s black cat, also named Momo. Building on the success of previous Halloween Doodles, including the popular Candy Cup Doodle which featured a black cat alongside the Yellow Witch, the team decided it was high time for a google cat to take center stage as the hero.
Initially, the game concept revolved around a magic cat creating a soup so delicious it could raise the dead. However, connecting soup to the Halloween theme proved too tenuous. The team then pivoted to the idea of a wizarding school, unlocking a richer world brimming with engaging characters and captivating themes perfect for a google cat protagonist.
Magic Cat Academy unfolds across five levels, each set within a different location in the school: the library, cafeteria, classroom, gym, and finally, the rooftop. The developers brainstormed a plethora of fun and quirky adversaries for each level, including a culinary ghost in the cafeteria, a logic-puzzle ghost in the classroom (perhaps wielding venn diagrams!), and even a whistle-blowing ghost in the gym capable of summoning spectral reinforcements.
Designing a full-fledged Doodle game was an exciting challenge for the team. They explored numerous intricate spell symbols, even considering spells that would conjure a witch’s hat atop Momo’s head when cast! Ultimately, for a fast-paced, time-sensitive game, simplicity won out. Ambitious ideas like an “Eiffel Tower spell” and humorous gag spells were set aside to ensure engaging and accessible gameplay for everyone, especially those eager to see a google cat in action.
