Cat cafes have become a delightful trend around the globe, and as a seasoned visitor of these feline havens, I can attest that some experiences are simply more memorable than others. It’s that element of delightful surprise that keeps the cat cafe exploration so exciting. My visit to Happy Cat in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was one such exceptional experience.
Our day began in Madison, Wisconsin, with an ambitious plan to reach Grand Rapids before Happy Cat closed its doors for the day. A journey filled with traffic tested our resolve, but the thought of feline cuddles kept us going. We arrived at Happy Cat with just an hour to spare, and from the moment we stepped inside, the travel stress melted away.
Kati, the owner, greeted us with a warmth that was instantly disarming. Her friendly and witty personality made us feel like we were catching up with an old friend. As we prepared our coffees in the cozy cafe and back sitting room, the beautifully restored historic building with its hip and artistic atmosphere enveloped us in a sense of calm and charm.

With drinks in hand, Kati led us into the heart of Happy Cat – the cat room. She introduced us to the current adorable residents, all thanks to the incredible work of Carol’s Ferals, renowned experts in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and community cat care. On the day of our visit, twelve cats graced the room with their presence. We met Buttons, a charming black and white feline, and Okra, a stunning calico. Brahms, a handsome and dignified tuxedo cat, quickly became a personal favorite with his serious yet endearing demeanor. Among them was Fiji, a sweet gray and white kitten who immediately bonded with Perry, spending most of our visit curled up on his lap, completely content with cuddles.
The cat room itself was a bright and inviting space, filled with color and light, creating a truly cozy and open environment. Happy Cat, which celebrated its first anniversary in August 2018, is the passion project of Kati and her husband, Adarsh. It’s often said that cat people have big hearts, but Kati and Adarsh are exceptional, ranking among the kindest individuals I’ve encountered in the cat cafe world. Their dedication to creating a happy space for both cats and humans is truly palpable.
Following Kati’s excellent recommendation, we ventured to the nearby Downtown Market for dinner after our visit. As we enjoyed our meal, we couldn’t stop talking about the wonderful time we had at Happy Cat. The cafe truly lives up to its name – it’s not just the cats who are happy, but also the lucky humans who get to experience this delightful Grand Rapids gem. The combination of lovable kitties and a warm, welcoming atmosphere is guaranteed to fill you with joy and good cheer. A visit to Happy Cat in Grand Rapids, Michigan, should be a top priority for anyone seeking a unique and heartwarming experience.
