Are you ready to combine two of the most delightful things in the world? We’re talking about the soft, squishy, and utterly delicious mochi rice cake, and of course, the equally soft, sometimes sweet, and always purrfect cat! Put them together, and you get the adorable Mochi Cat Amigurumi – or as we like to call it, the “MEOW-chi” Cat!
Imagine a whole tray of these charming creations, each one as cuddly as the next.
Mochi Cat Amigurumi Crochet
This free mochi cat crochet pattern is designed with one of the fluffiest yarns imaginable: Pipsqueak Yarn. Its incredibly soft texture makes this mochi cat amigurumi perfect for snuggling. In fact, we think this little mochi cat would even make a fantastic stress ball!
For the body of this amigurumi mochi cat, Pipsqueak yarn is ideal because it hides stitch definition, giving it a wonderfully plush, almost sewn-like appearance. However, for the ears, we switched to a trusty acrylic worsted weight yarn. This yarn provides the definition needed to make those cute little ears stand out.
Want to add a fun twist? Transform your mochi cat into a Riceball Kitty by simply adding a nori (seaweed) detail! We also affectionately call this version “Onipurri,” and doesn’t the Riceball Kitty with the nori topping look a bit like a ninja?
Riceball Kitty Amigurumi Here are the Mochi Cat Amigurumi, the playful Riceball Kitty, and even a Soot Sprite Kitty, all together! The big question is: who gets the last California roll?

Assembling Your Mochi Cat Amigurumi
Follow these simple steps to bring your mochi cat to life:
- Sew Ears to Body: Position the ears on top of the head and sew them securely. Curve the base of the ears slightly as you sew for a more natural shape.
- Create the Eyes: Cut two small circles from black felt for the eyes. Alternatively, you can use Safety eyes for a different look.
- Make the Mouth: Cut a wavy “W” shape from black felt to create the mouth. You can also embroider the mouth if you prefer.
- Add Cheeks: Cut two small ovals from pink felt for the cheeks.
- Attach Facial Features: Glue the felt eyes, mouth, and cheeks onto the face using Fabritac glue. Arrange them to create a cute and happy expression.
- For Riceball Kitty (Optional): Wrap the nori strip around the bottom portion of the mochi cat body, resembling a rice ball. Sew the nori in place to secure it.
- Finishing Touches: Hide and weave in all yarn ends to give your mochi cat amigurumi a clean finish.
