Sonic the Hedgehog fans are thrilled with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the exciting news of a fourth film and hints about new characters are keeping the hype alive. However, amidst all the excitement, a question lingers in the minds of some dedicated fans: Where is Big the Cat?
While perhaps not the most urgent question surrounding the Sonic movie franchise, the absence of the fishing-loving feline has been noted. IGN had the opportunity to discuss this with the writers of the Sonic trilogy, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and inquire about the whereabouts of the fan-favorite character. Interestingly, it turns out Big the Cat was almost included in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – in a rather unexpected and dark manner.
“In one draft of Sonic 2, when they’re traveling through the snowy mountains to the cave, we had a bit that was inspired by Indiana Jones,” Casey revealed. “In Indiana Jones, it’s a common trope to have a skeleton suddenly pop out and scare you. We considered doing that, but with the skeleton of, I would say, a Big the Cat, not necessarily –”
Miller interjected to clarify, “Not necessarily the Big the Cat.”
Casey continued, “But we ended up cutting it. It didn’t really make sense.“
So, there you have it – we were almost presented with a skeletal Big the Cat in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The writers mentioned that “Big the Cat” is often their go-to humorous response when fans ask about characters they’d like to introduce to the film series. They also shared that they have been consistently trying to incorporate Rouge the Bat into the movies, but haven’t succeeded in the first three films.
Stay tuned to IGN for our complete interview with Casey and Miller later this week, along with all the latest news and updates on the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
