Cozy Crochet Cat Hammock: A Free DIY Pattern for Your Feline Friend

Hey fellow crafters and cat lovers!

As someone who deeply appreciates the charm of our feline companions, even with a soft spot for dogs, I understand the allure of cats. Their grace, their softness, and the sheer joy of being able to scoop them up for a cuddle (a bit trickier with my 70-pound dog, though not impossible!) is undeniable. Just like any pet, cats need their personal space, especially in a home shared with other animals. That’s why I was inspired to create these adorable and comfy Cat Hammocks – the purrfect little luxury for our whiskered friends! I’m already planning to gift these to the cat moms in my circle.

This easy-to-follow, free crochet pattern is not only a delightful project but also a fantastic way to use up those leftover yarn scraps in your stash! I’ve designed this hammock using worsted weight yarn (typically marked with a 4 on the label), but feel free to experiment with other yarn types. Just remember to adjust the number of rows to ensure your final hammock is the ideal size for your cat.

This cat hammock pattern is broken down into two main components:

  • A large rectangular piece that forms the main body of the hammock.
  • Six sturdy straps for securely hanging your cat hammock.

Crochet Instructions for the Cat Hammock Body

This pattern utilizes the dc cluster stitch. If you’re new to this stitch, here’s a quick guide:

DC Cluster (Double Crochet Cluster): [Yarn over (YO), insert hook into stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.] Repeat the steps within the brackets until you have 4 loops on your hook. YO and pull through all 4 loops.

Let’s begin crocheting the body of the hammock:

Chain 68.

Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch across.

Row 2: Chain 2 (ch 2). Turn. Double crochet (dc) in each stitch across.

Row 3: (Optional: Change yarn color). Ch 2. Dc cluster in the next stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat the sequence in bold until the end of the row. Double crochet in the last stitch.

Row 4: (Optional: Change yarn color). Ch 2. Double crochet across.

Rows 5-7: Ch 2. Turn. Double crochet across for each row.

Rows 8 – 54: Repeat Rows 3-6 twelve more times. (This will give you a total of 13 cluster rows).

Row 55: Repeat Row 3.

Row 56: Repeat Row 2.

Row 57: Repeat Row 1. Tie off and weave in your ends.

Crochet Instructions for the Hammock Straps

Now, let’s create the sturdy straps to hang your hammock:

For each strap, chain 150 stitches. Chain 1 more, and single crochet in each stitch across. Tie off and weave in your ends.

You will need to make six straps in total. For a colorful look, create two straps in each of the three colors you used for the main hammock body!

Assembling the Crochet Cat Hammock

Time to put it all together! Follow these simple steps to attach the straps to your cat hammock body:

  1. Take your first strap and fold it in half to find the center point. Do the same with your crocheted hammock body to find the center of your first double crochet row.
  2. Position the center of the strap at the center of the hammock edge. Begin weaving the strap under and over pairs of double crochet stitches along the edge. A crochet hook can be helpful to pull the strap through the stitches.
