The previous attempt at AI cat names used a simple neural network. This time, the experiment utilized GPT-2, a powerful language model trained on a vast amount of internet text by OpenAI. GPT-2 has a much broader understanding of language, including which words and letter combinations are common and which to avoid. It was fed a list of over 8,000 existing cat names and tasked with generating new ones.
The results were certainly different from the first experiment. Gone were truly nonsensical creations like “Tilly-Mapper” and “Balllucidoux.” GPT-2 drew upon its knowledge of real words to produce a range of cat names that are, well, something else. The Morris Animal Refuge, known for their quirky approach (remember their neural network guinea pig names?), even used some of these AI-generated names for their adoptable kittens!
